A little bit about me...
I am a part time student right now at the University of South Alabama. I am majoring in Elementary Education. I am planning to graduate in the spring of 2012. After graduating with my Bachelor's Degree, I plan on working towards my Master's Degree in Special Education. I hope to find a teaching job after graduation in 2012.
Technology in the Classroom
There is so much that I have learned about technology. One thing that I have not learned enough about would be the smart boards. I would love to learn more about them and what I could use them for in the classroom. Skype is something I would have never thought about using in the classroom. I know now that it can be a valuable tool. Being able to Skype students and teachers half way around the world is very exciting and I think the students would learn a lot about the way things happen. Podcasts are another piece of technology that I had not heard of until recently. Using podcasts in the classroom would give the students opportunities to work together on group projects. It would also benefit the parents because they would be able to listen to their child’s podcast and hear what their learning about. These are just two of many technological advances that we could have in our schools.
Class Blogs
I have been unsure on whether or not I would have a class blog when I start teaching. But I have come to realize all the help and information that would be available to my students and their parents. Having a class blog would allow the parents to know what their child is doing in the classroom. If a child is out sick, the parents could go online and see what the class is doing and get the homework so their child is not behind. It would also give the parents another way to communicate with me.
Reading in the Classroom
I love to read. One of my goals as a future teacher is to get kids excited about reading. I would love to be able to have a story time everyday so the students could have time to not think about school work. I hope to show my future students that reading books is fun.
Creativity in the Classroom
Having creativity in the classroom is very important to me. I believe that every child is creative in his or her own way. We as teachers should help them figure out what their creativity leans to such as writing, art, music, and any other subjects. I will try to teach the “normal” different ways through creativity.
Being a Life Long Learner
Being a life long learner is very important to me. I admit that I do not know everything. I have to be willing to continue to learn from school, life, my future students and fellow teachers. Up until this semester, I thought that once I was done with school I would be done with learning. This semester has taught me that I will always be learning. It will be harder if I choose to fight it or I can accept that I don’t know everything and never will and be okay with it. I am excited about finally starting my education classes. I know that I will learn so many things that I have never thought of or never considered.
Teaching Strategies for the Classroom
There are many different teaching strategies that you can use in the classroom. The main one that I believe in is communication. If I cannot communicate effectively with my students, then they won’t get the best teacher I can be for them. Using group projects in the classroom is a good way to teach responsibility. These show the students that they have to communicate with there group and are responsible and have there part done on time. I’m not sure if I would use group projects in the younger kids, maybe just start showing them the process of working in groups.
Why I have chosen to be a Teacher
The first reason I have chosen to become a Teacher is because I love kids! I want to help students believe in themselves. Without believing in yourself, it is very hard to get where you want to go. Teaching is a very important job. To trust that your students will learn what they need to learn in order to succeed in school and life is tough. Teachers have to be creative in my opinion. We will not always have the students who are excited to learn. For those students who are not excited, we have to find a way to relate the material to them so they will be excited about learning. We have to be life long learners. If we do not continue to educate ourselves on technology, changing curriculums, etc, how can we expect our students to continue to learn from someone who doesn’t want to?
